Transforming My Kitchen...

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home. My kitchen was a big part of the reason I bought my house. I love the miles of counter space, the huge two-section sink, the dishwasher. I do not love my cabinets. The previous owner redesigned the house and did a wonderful job, except with the kitchen cabinets. I’ve got drawers that won’t open, cabinets that are useless because of their size and depth and the wood looks cheap. There’s little I can do about the drawers and cabinet size, but I’ve decided to paint the cabinets.

Right now my kitchen is almost overwhelmingly black. Black tile on the floors and counters, black appliances, black sink. I’ve used touches of red in my kitchen, but painting all my cabinets that color would be overwhelming. Instead I think I’ll take inspiration from my barstools and paint the cabinets a soft cream color. I’ll accent it with nice hardware and my kitchen should have an entirely new look! I think the cream will really brighten the room and I can add detail in black and possibly red.

I went to Lowe’s the other night for paint cards. Any advice?

  1. go soft grey, won't wash out the kitchen, but will accent both the black and red. more of a modern look i guess.

  2. I may try some greys too and see what I like better. Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. grey is definitely in and can be a lovely choice. whatever you do, be mindful of your wall color. you probably don't want your cabinets to blend in with the wall.

  4. Another choice is to do an antique finish - super easy and will pull in the dark from the appliances... expand the photo in this link to see what I am talking about.

  5. What I realized after writing this is that all my trim is done in white, so cream may not be a good idea. The walls are kind of a wheat color. Thanks for the suggestions!

  7. Love this idea Maggie! Except for maybe the sanding part, but I suppose that's inevitable...
